HISTORY AND COMPANY
Matusalem & Co. is the name of a large distillation and rum production company based in the Dominican Republic. It has been active since 1872 and, in its long history, has had the merit of having contributed to ennoble the famous Caribbean distillate all over the world, above all thanks to long aging in wood. As a traditional rough drink, consumed by local people, today rum is considered an elegant and refined distillate, rich in history and charm. The Matusalem distillery was founded in Cuba by two Spanish brothers along with a distiller friend. The Solera Method was immediately adopted for aging, imported from Spain and now widespread in the Caribbean, with the aim of producing very aged distillates. The reference to Methuselah, a biblical character who lived for 969 years, appeared on every label to emphasize and enhance long aging. This intuition proved to be a winner and, in 1881, the distillery obtained the first of a long series of international awards. During the Cuban revolution the society experienced a turbulent and troubled period, so much so as to be forced to move to the neighboring Dominican Republic, where it is still based today. The Matusalem & Company rums are famous and in demand all over the world. The production of sugar cane in the Dominican Republic allows the production of an intense and high quality molasses but it is especially the aging with the Solera Method that contribute decisively to define the unmistakable style of the distillery: 10 years for the "Clasico" and 15 for the "Gran Reserva", to mention only the most famous and widespread. The organoleptic profile is always marked by sweet, enveloping and never excessive notes: hints of caramel, butter, dried and toasted fruit that leave the taste elegant and dry. This impeccable balance has contributed to the attribution and dissemination of the nickname "Cognac del Rum" to designate the different editions of Gran Reserva. These are very valid labels, appreciated both by occasional drinkers and by lovers and enthusiasts.
