HISTORY AND COMPANY

Fascinated by an ancient and almost mystical land like Umbria and by a wine of extraordinary power and longevity such as Sagrantino, the Lunelli family acquired Tenuta Castelbuono, 30 hectares of vineyards in the municipalities of Bevagna and Montefalco, in 2001. Efforts were concentrated initially on the vineyards, now converted to organic, with new plants and the enhancement of existing ones through a complex project for selecting clones. In 2003 Montefalco Sagrantino came to light, followed by the Montefalco Rosso the following year. However, there was a need for a new cellar and the Lunelli family, thanks to a solid and old friendship with Arnaldo Pomodoro, one of the greatest contemporary artists, proposed to him to realize it. The Master accepted with enthusiasm and after the first inspection he had already imagined the project.   The "Carapace" - as Pomodoro wanted to call the cellar - took six years of work and was opened and opened to the public, for visits and tastings, in June 2012. It is a unique work that challenges the boundaries between sculpture and architecture. It is the first sculpture in the world in which one lives and works, a unique work in which art and nature, sculpture and wine dialogue, emphasizing the exceptional nature of both the containing and the content. It is offered to the eye like a large dome covered with copper, engraved with cracks that recall the furrows of the earth that embraces it. A sculptural element in the shape of a red dart sticking into the ground emphasizes the work in the landscape. Entering the "Carapace" means entering a sculpture by Pomodoro, as its artistic alphabet immediately perceives, immediately recognizable in the inner vault. An author's wine cellar for author's wines.
