HISTORY AND COMPANY

Walter Massa is an independent and courageous winemaker who, from the 70s at the helm of the family winery, succeeded in changing and relaunching the oenological face of an entire territory, that of the Colli Tortonesi. The greatest merit of Walter Massa, who became an almost legendary figure and considered by many colleagues as a master, was to rediscover a native vine that risked extinction, the Timorasso, sensing its great potential and obtaining memorable wines. Vigneti Massa is the name of the family winery, founded by Walter's ancestors in 1879, which today boasts a property of 23 hectares on the hills of Monleale, about 300 meters above sea level. We find the typical grape varieties of the area: Barbera, Croatina, Freisa but above all Timorasso, to which 10 hectares are reserved. In line with the long family and territorial tradition, these vineyards are cultivated with careful attention and a lot of peasant common sense, limiting treatments to a minimum. Enemy of all forms of bureaucracy and always upstream, Walter is convinced that wine is made in the vineyard and in the cellar and not with brands and documents, for this reason he has chosen not to use denomination for many of his labels, thanks to his consolidated reputation true artisan of wine. The cornerstone of Walter Massa's production is represented by Timorasso, which with the name of Derthona has by now imposed itself throughout Italy as a typical white wine of the Tortona hills. However, there is no shortage of great red wines, produced with Freisa, Barbera or Croatina, in this case they are unique and unconventional wines, the result of the mastery and creative flair of Walter Massa: real enological pearls of a territory of the highest potential.
