Sicily is an Italian region that can boast one of the most ancient wine-making traditions of the whole peninsula. It is believed that the vine grew spontaneously on the island even long before the arrival of the Greeks, who, after their establishment, were among the main architects of the viticulture proper and of the development of oenology in Sicily. Among the ancient and solid wineries that meet on the territory, the Tornatore winery is characterized by its deep roots, which date back to 1865 within the Etna terroir, and which turn to the future with a perspective of continuous renewal. In 1910 Giuseppe Tornatore built a house in the Piano Fiera district with 2 hectares of vineyard, to which were then added a further 2 hectares in the Piano Felci district, all exposed on the northern slope of Etna. These are volcanic soils, deriving from a mix of lava masses, ashes and lapilli accumulated over the centuries, characterized by a mild climate, which is influenced by the Nebrodi Mountains and which guarantees an excellent temperature range between the day and the night, ideal to favor the excellent maturation of the berries. In the vineyards, which extend for about 46 hectares within some very famous districts such as Pietrarizzo and Trimarchisa, the red and white grapes typical of the territory are cultivated, namely nerello mascalese, nerello cappuccio, carricante and cataratto. Every year the company makes six labels, divided between Etna Rosso, Etna Bianco and Rosato, for a total of about 60,000 bottles a year which, however, Francesco wants to bring, within a few years, to 400,000. An ambitious plan, which places at the center of the development products that represent the highest expression of the territories from which they come, vivid and vivid representation of what Sicilian wine is able to offer in the glass: try it!
