The Histoire
1894 is a pivotal year for Barbaresco. Before that date the Nebbiolo grown here was sold for producing Barolo wine or fermented as a simple table wine. In 1894 Domitius Cavazza, then dean of the Royal School of Alba Wine and lives in Barbaresco, where he was the owner of the castle and the annexed farm, created the "Cantine di Barbaresco Social 'for the' production of luxury wines and meal '
Gathering around him nine of farmers and owners, he began making wine in the cellars of the Castle and to name the wine with the name of the country itself. The Nebbiolo grown in Barbaresco had its distinct character was known, but Cavazza first recognized this characteristic on the label. 1894 is therefore the year of birth unofficial Barbaresco wine.
Cavazza died in 1913 and the winery was closed in years 20. In 1958, referring to that tradition, Don Fiorino Marengo, then pastor of Barbaresco, gathered nineteen farmers and founded the Produttori del Barbaresco "for the qualification and Barbaresco guarantee." fully centered and still pursued: thanks to the dedication and work of the winemakers who created it, the Produttori del Barbaresco has long been considered among the most prestigious wineries in the area and is an example for co-operatives around the world.
The Winery
Founded in 1958, today has 50 members with about 110 hectares of
Nebbiolo vineyards (1/7 of the area of origin), and controls much of the 'cru' historical area. The Produttori del Barbaresco Nebbiolo grape makes wine only, producing a Barbaresco D.O.C.G., from grapes from different vineyards in the area of origin, and a Langhe Nebbiolo D.O.C. with grapes of the same vineyards judged less likely to produce a wine for aging, easy and ready to drink.
In great vintages they are produced and marketed 9 Barbaresco from specific vineyards as Barbaresco Riserva: Asili, Rabajà, Rio Sordo, Ovello, Montestefano, Pajé, Muncagota, Montefico, Pora, areas have always been known for producing particularly fine grapes. Vintage 2007 they are officially recognized by the product as "Additional Geographic Mentions." The Cru name and the owners of the vineyards themselves are shown on the numbered labels.
In a good year it is so produced about 500,000 bottles divided between Barbaresco (40%), reserve (35%) and Langhe Nebbiolo (25%).
